London welcomed the Olympic Games back again in 2012, adding another chapter to the country's Olympic story and giving the country a summer to remember. That same year, cycling produced a genuine breakthrough: Bradley Wiggins became the rider who finally carried Britain to a Tour de France title, a race British competitors had ridden for generations without ever winning it outright.

Athletics then delivered a golden night of its own. Mo Farah won Olympic gold in 2012 across the 5,000 metres and the 10,000 metres, a result that made headlines well beyond the athletics track. His win in the 10,000 metres stood apart on its own: no British runner had ever taken that Olympic title before Farah's win that summer.

That same golden summer also belonged to Jessica Ennis, who added her own Olympic gold to the medal tally in 2012, another British success from a Games that kept producing new champions right through to its final week.
