London welcomed the Olympic Games back in 2012, the third time the UK hosted them, with the main site in Stratford, East London. That same year, cycling produced a breakthrough: Bradley Wiggins won the Tour de France, and no British rider had ever won it before.
Athletics brought more gold. Mo Farah, a distance runner born in Somalia, won Olympic gold in 2012 across the 5,000 metres and the 10,000 metres. His win over the 10,000 metres stood apart: no Briton had taken that Olympic title before him.
The Paralympic Games in 2008 had already brought another young name forward. Ellie Simmonds was the youngest on the British team at those Games, and she won swimming gold medals in 2008 and again in 2012.
