Jessica Ennis won Olympic gold in 2012 in the heptathlon, which is not one race but seven different track and field events taken together. Several British athletics records are hers as well, and her gold came at the London Olympic Games.
Tennis had a big year too. Andy Murray won the singles title at the US Open in 2012, and in the same year he also took an Olympic gold medal and an Olympic silver medal, and at Wimbledon he reached the men's singles final but finished second.
In the pool, Ellie Simmonds won further Paralympic gold medals in 2012, adding to the success she had already shown at an earlier Games. She also holds a number of world records.
