The 1966 World Cup, and Olympic champions

Many sports began in Britain, among them cricket, lawn tennis, golf, rugby and football. Bobby Moore captained the England team that won its only World Cup, at the tournament held in 1966. The UK hosted the football World Cup that year, and it remains England’s only international football tournament victory.
Winter sport had its own great result when Torvill and Dean won Olympic gold for ice dancing in 1984, and went on to win four consecutive world championships. Running and sailing both had a strong year in 2004: Dame Kelly Holmes, who has also held a number of British and European records, won two Olympic gold medals for running, while Ellen MacArthur became the fastest person to sail solo around the world.
