Margaret Thatcher, a grocer's daughter from Grantham who had trained as a chemist and a lawyer, became a cabinet minister in 1970, holding the post of Secretary of State for Education and Science. Then, in 1975, the Conservatives chose her as their Leader, which made her Leader of the Opposition. Later, John Major was Prime Minister after her, and he played a part in setting up the Northern Ireland peace process.
Roald Dahl is known above all for his children's books, though he wrote for adults as well, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is among the most famous of them. Born in Wales to Norwegian parents, Dahl served in the Royal Air Force in the Second World War, and several of his books were turned into films.
