Factory Life and Company Rule

A global power1714 to 1901

Life in the new factories was hard. Working conditions during the Industrial Revolution were known for being very poor: employees had no legal protection and were often made to put in long hours in dangerous settings. Overseas, the East India Company was originally set up to trade, yet it went on to gain control of large parts of India.

Richard Arkwright was born in 1732 and trained and worked as a barber before he turned to textiles. Sake Dean Mahomet, who grew up in the Bengal region of India, was born in 1759.

A few years after reaching Britain, Mahomet moved to Ireland, and there in 1786 he eloped with an Irish girl called Jane Daly. The couple later came back to England at around the turn of the century.
